A narrow opening, hole, or groove, especially one for receiving something, such as a coin. Also: a position or berth, as in an aircraft or on a train; a slot in the wing of certain birds, which during flight helps maintain a flow of air over the wings.
A machine that accepts cash or, on “ticket-in, ticket-out” machines, a paper ticket with a barcode. The machine then activates reels that stop to rearrange symbols when a button is pressed (either physical or on a touchscreen). The machine awards credits based on the combinations and payouts of those symbols. Some slots have bonus features, such as Wilds that substitute for other symbols to create winning combinations, or unlock a jackpot or bonus level.
The computer inside a slot goes through thousands of combinations per minute, so the odds that you would hit the button at exactly the right moment to win a prize are minute. Getting greedy or betting more than you can afford to lose are the biggest pitfalls of slot playing.
A time period during which a ship may take off or land, as authorized by an airport or air-traffic controller: He scheduled the flight to arrive at 10:00 AM, so that we could have a slot at the gate.
